What is Visual Testing VT?
Most parts are checked for quality mainly by looking at them, which is called visual testing. Even when other nondestructive testing (NDT) methods are needed, visual testing is still the most important. In fact, many rules and standards require a part to pass a visual test before any other NDT method can be used. Visual testing is the most commonly used NDT method because it is simple, fast, and often does not require special equipment—just good eyesight and a few basic, low-cost tools compared to other NDT methods.
Even though visual testing has many benefits, one big drawback is that it requires a skilled inspector. The person performing the test needs to have a lot of experience and knowledge in several areas. A visual testing (VT) technician must understand materials, blueprints, industry codes, welding procedures, quality standards, and best practices for both shop and field work.
