What is Magnetic Particle Testing?

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a nondestructive testing (NDT) method used to find surface or near-surface defects in materials that can be magnetized. This method works because magnetic fields change when there is a break or flaw in the material, creating what is called flux leakage.

To perform the test, the object is magnetized by either passing an electric current through it (direct magnetization) or placing it in a magnetic field (indirect magnetization). Since the magnetic field runs perpendicular to the electric current, the test is done in at least two different directions to ensure full coverage.

Once the object is magnetized, tiny magnetic particles are spread over its surface. These particles can be dry or mixed in a liquid. If there is a defect, the particles gather at the flaw, making it visible. Fluorescent particles can also be used, which glow under black light for better visibility. After removing any excess particles, the defect’s location, shape, and size can be seen.
