Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Learn how high-frequency sound waves are used to detect internal flaws and measure material thickness in critical components. Ultrasonic testing is widely used in industries such as oil & gas, power generation, manufacturing, and infrastructure inspection.
Why Take These Courses?
Nondestructive testing (NDT) training prepares technicians, inspectors, and engineers with the knowledge needed to inspect critical components without causing damage. These courses are designed to support career advancement across industries such as oil & gas, aerospace, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure while helping students build the training hours required for employer-based certification programs.
Flexible
Study at your own pace with 24/7 access to course materials. No travel expenses or time off work required—complete your training on your schedule, from anywhere.
Industry-Relevant Training
Our courses are designed for working professionals and may be used toward continuing education or recertification requirements. Training hours may qualify for recertification or professional development units through organizations such as API, AWS, and ASNT, depending on the certifying body’s requirements.

Level I: What You'll Learn
Our comprehensive 40-hour program covers foundational ultrasonic testing principles and practical application techniques.
Your learning journey is tracked through our Learning Management System (LMS), allowing you to revisit any lesson as many times as needed during your enrollment. Each module builds on the previous one to ensure mastery of UT fundamentals:
- Introduction to Ultrasonic Testing – Understand UT’s role in NDT and industry applications
- Basic Principles of Acoustics – Master sound wave behavior, velocity, and material interaction
- Ultrasonic Testing Equipment – Learn to operate and calibrate UT instruments and systems
- Transducer Operation and Theory – Explore probe types, frequency selection, and beam characteristics
- Basic Ultrasonic Testing Methods – Apply straight-beam, angle-beam, and immersion testing techniques
Upon completion, you’ll be equipped to perform ultrasonic inspections across diverse industries including construction, energy, aerospace, manufacturing, and defense.
Level II: What You'll Learn
Level II training elevates your capabilities from basic ultrasonic testing to advanced inspection and interpretation. You’ll master calibration protocols, evaluate diverse material forms, and gain proficiency in specialized UT methods including phased array and TOFD technologies:
- Principles of Ultrasonics – Advanced wave behavior, mode conversion, and acoustic impedance concepts
- Equipment Calibration – Precision calibration procedures for various UT systems and applications
- Evaluation of Base Material Product Forms – Inspect welds, castings, forgings, and complex geometries
- Ultrasonic Testing Applications – Industry-specific inspection protocols and acceptance criteria
- Phased Array – Multi-element probe technology for enhanced flaw detection and visualization
- Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) – Advanced sizing technique for through-wall crack measurements
- Guided Wave Method – Long-range inspection for pipes, tubes, and plate structures
- Evaluation Standards – Interpret codes, specifications, and discontinuity acceptance criteria
Upon completing Level II certification, you’ll be qualified to set up equipment, calibrate instruments, interpret complex indications, and make critical accept/reject decisions in accordance with industry standards and specifications.
Required Textbook Purchase
To meet certification and regulatory requirements, all students are required to purchase the ASNT Ultrasonic Testing Classroom Training Book (Second Edition) directly from ASNT. This textbook is an essential resource and is necessary for successful completion of the course.
Students may choose between a physical copy or a digital edition, allowing them to begin their studies right away in whichever format best suits their needs.
Please note: due to ASNT’s copyright protections on digital materials, the National Inspection Academy cannot facilitate the purchase on your behalf. All orders must be made directly through ASNT.
Training Certificate
Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a National Inspection Academy Certificate of Completion documenting the required training hours and successful examination in accordance with the guidelines outlined in ASNT SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, NAS-410, and the course outline requirements of ANSI/ASNT CP-105.
